Toyota manufactured this mid-sized car from December ’76 to ’92 through 4 generations. Toyota Cressida was Toyota Mark II’s export version sold in the country Japan. It was later replaced with Toyota Avalon in North America. Every Toyota Cressida was manufactured at Motomachi plant in Toyota, Aichi. ‘Cressida' nameplate has derived from the female Trojan character from William Shakespeare's play called ‘Troilus and Cressida.' Toyota Cressida's original name was ‘Corona Mark II' which was renamed for the export markets and Cressida name was not used in Japan. This car was the largest sedan & wagon range of Toyota in North America.

The personal luxury coupe was not offered in North America. The six-cylinder Crown was replaced by the 2-litre 4-cylinder sedan in the local assembly after the year 1970's oil crisis prompting to the government for imposing 60% sales tax on the cars with engines bigger than 2 liters. Some completely built-up Crowns were then imported. In the other markets, the larger Crown also stayed available. The standard features of the car had an automatic transmission, air conditioning along with the 5-speed manual, rear seat armrests, power steering, reclining front seats, AM?FM cassette stereo along with the amplifier and a rear window defroster. The power windows were made optional.
